to school. there is a massive search under way tonight. abc's clayton sandell is in colorado with the first key clue in this case. >> reporter: three days since 10-year-old jessica ridgeway vanished. today the first real clue. police recovered a backpack and water bottle they believe might be jessica's about six miles from where she vanished. >> the backpack has been isolated. the bloodhound is being used. >> reporter: today new teams of scent dogs combed her westminster, colorado, neighborhood. jessica's mother sarah says she last saw her daughter friday as she walked to school but she never arrived. the school called home, but her mother works overnights and says she was asleep missing the call. by the time she discovered jessica missing, eight crucial hours had passed. to give you an idea of the neighborhood, jessica's house is right over there, and this is about the point where her mother would have last seen her, and as you can see, it's only three houses from the park where jessica was supposed to meet with her friends meaning if she was taken here, it happened in a very short distanc

for jessica rodriguez, last seen leaving for school yesterday morning. she never arrived. clayt clayton sandell is on this story. clayton? >> reporter: good morning to you, dan. 50 police officers, including the fbi, are search right now, overnight using bloodhounds in temperatures that near freezing. and no sign of jessica. a desperate search under way for a 10-year-old last seen nearly 24 hours a ago. the last time anybody saw jessica was 8:30 friday morning. she left to walk three blocks to meet friends for a walk to school. a route she did every day. but she never got there. when jessica didn't show up for class, the school called her home. but jessica's mother, who works the overnight shift was asleep. she didn't get the message. that delayed her calling police for nearly eight hours. >> when we start with a delay as substantial as this, the distance she could have wandered even on her own, it just gets huge. >> reporter: police say jessica's weather, who lives out of state, is in a custody battle with jessica's mother. they do not believe jessica can with him. but are not ruling a
justice for jessica. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: it is a bizarre clue. a small, wooden cross, that police say it belongs to jessica ridgeway's killer. >> it looks like it was cut by hand or by machine. out of a solid block of wood. >> reporter: overnight, investigators released new photos of the cross, hoping someone recognizes it. it was found at one of the crime scenes in the case. but police won't say which one because that is information only the killer knows. >> we believe it was left behind or dropped by somebody that was involved and knows information that we're looking for. >> left intentionally, perhaps? >> it potentially was left intentionally. >> reporter: jessica vanished october 5th when she walked to school. hundreds of volunteers scoured the area near her colorado home but found no signs of the fifth grader. two days later, her back dak was left conspicuously on a sidewalk, just a few miles away. after that, jessica's dismembered body was discovered in this field. >> we recognize there's a predator at large in our community. >> reporter: police ar

. ♪ >> reporter: hundred of people filled the clayton baptist church to remember autumn pasquale in song and prayer. >> she was one of the best people i ever met. caring. trusting. >> reporter: mourners embraced her parents in the sanctuary and lit candles for the seventh grader outside. >> this is a horrific tragedy that doesn't happen here. >> reporter: adding to the tragedy of autumn's death is the fact that two young men, brothers, ages 15 and 17, students at clayton high school, have been charged with her murder. police say the younger boy lured her inside the family's home on east clayton avenue so he could steal her bike and sell the parts. >> he never stole my bike. never stole anything out of my yard. i heard they steal bikes. >> reporter: the prosecutor says the boys' mother turned her sons in. >> during the course of this investigation, the juveniles' mother contacted law enforcement, regarding postings on his facebook account. >> reporter: that tip led police to the home on east claytonch anew half a mile from where autumn was last seen. police found the 12-year-old's bodien
